An old woman saved a wolf that was drowning in icy water, risking her own life, but she could never have imagined what
a nightmare that act would become for her…
That winter was especially harsh. The freezing temperatures had lasted for weeks, and the mountain lake was almost
completely covered with a thick layer of ice. Only one large opening remained where the water had not yet frozen over.
That was exactly where a young gray wolf had fallen through.
He desperately tried to climb out, clawing at the edge of the ice with his paws, but it kept breaking beneath his weight.
Again and again, the wolf slipped back into the freezing water. His strength was fading. His soaked fur dragged him
downward, his breathing became uneven, and his movements grew slower and slower.
Not far away, an elderly woman was walking along the shore. She lived alone in a small cabin near the forest and often
went out to collect dry branches for her stove.
At first, she thought she heard a bird crying somewhere. But the strange sound came again. The woman followed the
noise and soon saw a terrifying sight.
In the middle of the lake, a huge wolf was drowning in the opening in the ice.
Most people would have turned around and walked away. After all, this was a wild predator that could attack at any
moment. But the old woman could not simply stand by and watch a living creature die before her eyes.
She quickly found a long, sturdy branch and carefully crawled across the ice toward the opening. Every meter was
difficult. The ice cracked softly beneath her weight, and the freezing wind struck her face.
“Hold on just a little longer,” she said quietly.
The wolf noticed the woman and immediately became cautious. For a moment, he even bared his teeth, but he no longer
had the strength to resist.
The old woman stretched the branch as close to him as possible.
For several seconds, the wolf did not understand what she wanted. Then he gathered his last remaining strength and
hooked his front paws around the branch.
The woman began to pull.
Her arms immediately ached from the strain. She could feel the wolf’s heavy body resisting the water. Several times, the
branch nearly slipped from her hands, but she continued pulling with all her might.
At last, the wolf made it onto the ice.
He collapsed heavily beside the opening and lay motionless for several seconds. Heavy breaths escaped from his
muzzle, and one of his hind legs appeared to be injured.
The woman sighed with relief. It seemed that the worst was over. But she could never have imagined what horror this act

Then suddenly, she heard a rustling sound behind her.
First one.
Then another.
And then dozens more.
The old woman slowly lifted her head toward the forest and felt a chill run down her spine.
Shadows were moving between the trees.
One.
Three.
Five.
Seven.
Within seconds, an entire wolf pack stood at the edge of the forest.
The woman froze with fear. She knew it was already too late to run. The shore was too far away, and the ice beneath her
feet remained slippery and dangerous.
The wolves watched her carefully.
Some of them slowly moved closer.
The old woman prepared herself for the worst.
But at that very moment, something happened that she never expected.
The wolf she had saved struggled to his feet.
He was still trembling from the cold and pain, but he stepped forward anyway.
Then he positioned himself between the woman and his pack.
For several seconds, the wolf stared at the other predators.
Then he let out a low warning growl.
It was not loud, but it was enough.
The entire pack stopped.
Not a single animal took another step forward.

The woman could hardly believe her eyes.

Now, the wolves were simply walking away.
The animal she had saved remained beside her for a few more seconds. Then he turned and looked at the old woman.
There was neither anger nor fear in his eyes.
It seemed as though he simply wanted to remember the person who had saved his life.
After that, the wolf slowly turned around and, limping slightly, followed his pack.
The old woman watched him for a long time.
And when the last silhouettes disappeared among the snow-covered trees, she finally stood up and made her way home.
