Banana Peel Trick for Cockroaches: A Simple DIY Method Worth Trying
If you'd rather avoid using chemical insecticides indoors, there are a few household ingredients that some people use as homemade cockroach control methods. One popular idea combines banana peels with common kitchen supplies.
Banana Peel Mixture
Instead of throwing away banana peels, cut them into small pieces and place them in a shallow bowl. Add a spoonful of salt and a small amount of laundry detergent or washing powder, then mix everything together.
The sweet scent of the banana peel may attract cockroaches, while the salt and detergent are intended to discourage or eliminate them after contact. Place the bowl in areas where cockroaches are commonly seen, such as behind appliances, under sinks, or in dark corners. Check the bait the next morning and replace it regularly if needed.
Other Natural Ways to Help Keep Cockroaches Away
1. Soap Solution
Mix about 20 ml of liquid soap with 500 ml of water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and apply it around baseboards, under cabinets, and other places where cockroaches frequently travel.
2. Citrus Peels
Dry orange, lemon, or grapefruit peels and place them in areas where cockroaches are often found. The strong citrus aroma may help discourage pests from lingering in those spaces.
3. Garlic and Onion
Garlic and onions have strong odors that many people believe cockroaches dislike.
-
Sprinkle garlic powder into cracks and hidden corners.
-
Blend garlic and onion with a little water, strain the mixture, and spray it around entry points.
-
Alternatively, place chopped onion and garlic on small plates near areas where cockroaches are active, replacing them every few days.
4. Baking Soda and Sugar
Mix equal parts baking soda and sugar and place the mixture in small containers near cockroach hiding spots. The sugar acts as bait, while the baking soda is commonly used in homemade pest-control recipes.
Some homeowners also pour a mixture of baking soda and hot water down sink drains to help clean the pipes and reduce odors that may attract pests.
Prevention Tips
Natural remedies can sometimes help reduce cockroach activity, but they work best when combined with good household hygiene:
-
Keep food sealed in airtight containers.
-
Clean up crumbs and spills promptly.
-
Empty trash bins regularly.
-
Repair leaking pipes and remove standing water.
-
Seal cracks and gaps where cockroaches can enter.
Using a combination of cleanliness, prevention, and appropriate pest-control methods is generally the most effective way to keep cockroaches out of your home.
