The man twisted against the chair.

The floorboards groaned under him.

Outside, thunder rolled over the mountain.

“Get it out!” he shouted.

The woman swallowed hard.

Her face was pale in the firelight.

The man stopped breathing for one second.

So did she.

Then she leaned closer.

The lantern buzzed.

The storm hit the windows harder.

He squeezed his eyes shut.

She whispered:

“Stay still.”

Her hand moved carefully.

The metal touched his ear.

The man screamed again, but this time there was something else under the scream.

Fear.

Recognition.

Like part of him knew what was coming.

The woman’s eyes narrowed.

She saw movement.

Tiny.

Dark.

Wrong.

Her breath caught.

“Oh God…”

The man froze.

She didn’t answer.

Her grip tightened on the tweezers.

Slowly, carefully, she pulled.

Something resisted.

The man’s chair jerked.

Then she pulled harder.

Nothing.

The man opened his eyes.

Not in pain.

Not screaming.

Just listening.

Moving.

Alive.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Then she whispered:

The thing twitched.

The man looked at it.

The woman looked at him.

And then the creature made a sound.

It had come from outside the cabin.
