I saved a dog from a sinking car by smashing the window while the driver calmly went into a store and left it by the
river… but instead of gratitude, I was sued for property damage
My plan to put her in her place was very harsh
That evening, I was simply walking home after work, thinking about my own things. Nothing hinted at danger. By the
river it was quiet, the water looked calm, people were walking, some were sitting on benches. And suddenly my
attention was drawn to a car parked far too close to the edge. It stood at a strange angle, as if it could slip down at
any moment.
At first I didn’t pay much attention, but a few seconds later something happened that I still see in front of my eyes.
The car slowly started rolling backward.
At first almost unnoticeably, as if someone had lightly pushed it. Then faster. The wheels slipped on the wet ground,
and the car plunged straight into the water. It all happened in a matter of moments. People around began to scream,
some ran toward the shore, others pulled out their phones.
I was about to jump into the water when I suddenly heard a sound that made my chest tighten.
A desperate whimper was coming from the car. There was a puppy inside.
Small, terrified, it darted around the interior, scratching at the glass, trying to get out, but the doors were locked. The
water began filling the car quickly, rising higher and higher. There was almost no time left.
Another man and I, without saying a word, jumped into the water. It was cold, the current pulled downward, but there
was only one thought in my head — make it in time.
I swam to the door and pulled the handle. Locked. Again. Useless.
The car was already half underwater, the windows cracking under pressure. The puppy panicked even more, its
movements becoming chaotic.
At that moment, someone from the shore shouted and threw me a stone.
I caught it and, without thinking, swung.
First hit — a crack. Second — the glass began to shatter.
The third hit was the strongest. The window burst, water rushed in even faster, but I had a chance. I reached inside,
found the puppy, which was barely resisting anymore, and pulled it out.
We got back to the shore, and the people around let out a sigh of relief. Someone patted me on the shoulder,
someone said I did a good job. The puppy trembled, pressed against me, its heart pounding wildly.
And at that exact moment, she appeared — the driver of the car.
A young woman, about twenty-five, dressed in expensive clothes, with a phone in her hand. She ran up to the car,
which was already almost completely submerged, and shouted:
— What did you do?!
At first I thought she was worried about the puppy, but within a second I realized I was wrong.
— You broke my window! Are you insane? — she looked at me with such anger, as if I had done something terrible.
People around began explaining to her that the car had rolled on its own, that there was a puppy inside, that we had
no choice. But she didn’t seem to hear.
— I don’t care about the puppy! It’s my car! It’s worth a fortune! Who is going to pay for this now?
I stood there, soaked, exhausted, with trembling hands, and simply couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
— I saved your dog, — I said calmly. — You left it in a locked car by the edge. This could have ended much worse.
— I’m going to sue you, — she replied sharply. — You had no right to touch my property.
I stood there listening to her and couldn’t understand how someone could be so heartless and ungrateful. And in that
moment, a brilliant plan came to my mind. Here’s what I did. I tell my story in the first comment and hope for your
support
I didn’t argue. I didn’t shout. I simply handed her the puppy, turned around, and walked away. But on my way home, a
plan was already forming in my head.
And it wasn’t about shouting or revenge in the usual sense
A few days later, I actually received a court summons.
She demanded compensation for the broken window. I came to the hearing calmly. But not alone.
With me were the very witnesses who had seen everything with their own eyes. One of them even had a video — the
exact moment when the car starts rolling and falls into the water. In the recording, you could hear the puppy whining,
see how we jumped into the water, and how I broke the window.
But that wasn’t all.
Before the hearing, I had filed a report with animal protection services and attached the same evidence. Leaving a
puppy in a locked car by the edge was already a serious violation.
When the video was played in the courtroom, the woman’s face changed. Her confidence disappeared, her voice
became quieter. And when the representative from the service began asking her questions, it became clear how it
would end.
The court dismissed her claim.
Moreover, she was fined for animal cruelty and violation of safety regulations.
And the puppy was temporarily taken from her to check the conditions in which it was being kept.
I left the courtroom without feeling victory or joy. Just with the understanding that sometimes the right thing is not to
respond to evil with evil, but to let people face the consequences of their own actions.
And honestly, it turned out to be much stronger than any revenge.
