My husband came to take me and our newborn triplets home, but he told me to leave them at the hospital.
After years of waiting, Isabella had beautiful triplet daughters. However, her husband abandoned them the next day, claiming that the babies were cursed.
As I gazed at my three daughters, my heart swelled with overwhelming emotion. Mia, Ava, and Chloe were miracles—perfect in every way. I had waited so long for them, praying and hoping for this moment.
They were peacefully sleeping in their bassinets, their tiny faces calm and serene. A tear rolled down my cheek as I wiped it away, consumed by the love I felt for them.
Just then, Thomas appeared. He had returned from his errands, but his expression was pale. He wouldn't meet my gaze or come closer. He stood near the entrance, his body stiff, as if he didn’t want to be there.
“Thomas?” I whispered, patting the chair beside me. "Come sit with me. Look, they're here. We did it.”
He muttered, “Yeah… they’re beautiful,” but his eyes remained averted, avoiding both the girls and me.
I could barely ask, “Thomas, what’s going on? You’re scaring me.”
After a long breath, he finally spoke, his voice shaky. “Isabella, I don’t think… I don’t think we can keep them.”
It felt as though the floor dropped beneath me. “What?” I gasped, choking on my words. “What do you mean, Thomas? These are our daughters!”
He flinched, wincing as though he couldn't bear to look at me. “My mother saw a fortune teller,” he whispered.
Confused and uncertain that I had heard him correctly, I blinked. “Fortune teller? Are you serious, Thomas?”
He nodded, his voice quivering. “She said that these babies will bring bad luck. That they’ll ruin my life and even… kill me.”
I stared at him, dumbfounded. “That’s insane, Thomas. They’re just babies!”
Looking down, his face was filled with fear. “Mom swears by the fortune teller. She’s been right before, but this time… she’s certain.”
A surge of hot, stinging rage welled up inside me. “So you’re going to abandon them because of some ridiculous prediction? You’re going to leave your daughters?”
He stopped, looking at me with a mixture of guilt and fear. “If you want to keep them… then fine,” he whispered. “But I won’t be there. Isabella, I’m sorry.”
I struggled to comprehend his words, feeling my heart shatter. “You’re serious, aren’t you?” My voice cracked. “You’re going to leave your daughters over a lie your mother heard?”
He said nothing, his shoulders drooping as he stared at the ground.
I took a deep, shaky breath, trying to remain calm. “If you walk out that door, Thomas, you’re not coming back,” I whispered. “I won’t let you hurt our daughters.”
He looked at me one final time, his face torn, then turned and walked away. “I’m sorry, Izzy,” he said softly before disappearing into the corridor.
I stared at the empty doorway, my heart racing as I tried to make sense of what had just happened. A nurse entered the room, saw the look on my face, and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder without saying a word.
I looked down at my babies, tears blurring my vision. “Don’t worry, my loves,” I whispered as I gently petted each little head. “I’m here. I’ll always be here.”
Holding them close, I felt a mixture of fear and determination. I had no idea how I would manage alone, but I knew one thing for sure—I would never leave my girls. Never.
Thomas had left weeks ago, and each day without him felt harder than I had anticipated. Taking care of three newborns on my own was exhausting, both physically and emotionally.
There were days when I could barely keep it together, but I pushed forward for Mia, Ava, and Chloe. Even though Thomas’s abandonment had torn me apart, I had to focus on my daughters because they were everything to me.
One afternoon, my sister-in-law, Claire, came over to help with the babies. I had tried to stay in touch with her, as she was the only one in the family who was willing to offer support, hoping she might convince Thomas to return. But when she arrived that day, I could see that something was weighing heavily on her.
Claire looked at me with a troubled expression, biting her lip. “Izzy, I heard something… I don’t know if I should tell you, but I can’t keep it to myself.”
My heart raced. “What is it?” I asked, my voice tight.
She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “I overheard a conversation between Mom and Aunt Sarah. She said there was no fortune teller.”
I froze, unable to comprehend her words. “No fortune teller?”
Claire nodded sympathetically. “Mom made it up. She didn’t want Thomas to feel overwhelmed by the triplets, and she thought that if she convinced him the babies were cursed, he’d stay close.”
The world seemed to spin around me. My anger flared, and I had to gently place Chloe in her crib as my hands trembled.
“That woman,” I seethed, barely able to keep my voice steady. “She tore my family apart out of selfishness.”
Claire placed a hand on my shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Izzy. She never imagined Thomas would leave you. But now you know the truth.”
I stayed awake all night, my mind racing. I wanted to confront my mother-in-law immediately, but I also wanted to tell Thomas the truth and hope that he would come back.
The next morning, I dialed Thomas’s number, my hands shaking as the phone rang. Finally, he answered.
“Thomas, it’s me,” I said, keeping my voice calm. “We need to talk.”
He sighed on the other end. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Izzy.”
“Just listen,” I pleaded, trying to remain composed. “There was no fortune teller. Your mother lied to you.”
There was a long silence. Finally, he spoke in a dismissive tone. “Izzy, I don’t think that’s true. My mom wouldn’t lie about something so important.”
“She did,” I said, my voice shaking with fury. “She confessed it to Aunt Sarah. She lied to keep you from leaving her.”
He scoffed, the sound cutting through me. “Look, Izzy, that fortune teller has been right before. I know her better than you do. My mom wouldn’t lie about something like this.”
I felt my heart sink but pressed on. “Thomas, think about it. Why would she lie? These girls are your family. Can you really abandon them over something like this?”
He sighed heavily, then said quietly, “I’m sorry, Izzy. I can’t.”
The line went dead. I stared at the phone, knowing that he had made his decision. He was gone.
Over the following weeks, I struggled to adjust to life as a single mother. The constant feedings, diaper changes, and the weight of my grief made each day feel impossible.
But change came slowly. Friends and family brought meals and helped me care for the babies while I rested. And with each smile, coo, or little hand reaching for mine, my love for Mia, Ava, and Chloe deepened. It was as if, in those small moments, I was able to forget about Thomas’s absence, if only for a while.
Then, several weeks later, there was a knock on my door. I opened it to find Thomas’s mother standing there, her face pale and filled with regret.
“Izzy,” she said, trembling. “I never meant for any of this to happen.”
I crossed my arms, trying to keep my composure. “You lied to him. You convinced him that his daughters were cursed.”
She nodded, tears streaming down her face. “I was afraid. I thought… I thought he’d ignore me with you and the girls. I never imagined he’d leave.”
My anger softened slightly, but not enough to forgive her. “Your fear destroyed our family.”
She collapsed in sorrow, her eyes downcast. “I know. I’m so sorry.”
I stood there for a moment, watching her, but my thoughts were on my daughters, sleeping in the other room. “I don’t have anything else to say,” I said quietly.
She left, and I closed the door behind her, a strange mixture of relief and sadness settling in my chest.
A year later, Thomas appeared on my doorstep, a ghost of the man I once loved. He begged to return, to be a family again, claiming he had realized his mistake.
But now I knew better. I looked him in the eyes and shook my head. “Thomas, I have a family now. You were absent when we needed you. I don’t need you.”
A weight lifted as I closed the door. I didn’t ruin his life, and neither did my daughters. He did that on his own.
