The baby clung to him instantly, shaking, crying into his chest.

Heat shimmered off the asphalt.

Voices murmured.
Tension spread.

Then—

a scream cut through the noise.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY CAR?!”

The woman rushed in, breathless, furious.

The young man turned slowly.

Eyes burning.

“Your child was locked inside.”

Silence flickered.

Then whispers grew louder.

She froze—

just for a second—

then snapped back.

“I was gone for one minute!”

He stepped closer.

Lower. Sharper.

“He couldn’t breathe.”

The baby tightened his grip—

small fingers digging into the man’s shirt.

Still crying.

The man looked down at him.

Something shifted.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not panic.

Recognition.

He looked back at the woman—

longer this time.

Deeper.

Quieter.

“Why does he call me ‘Dad’?”

Everything stopped.

The street.
The voices.
The world.

The woman’s face drained of color.

Her lips parted—

no sound came out.
