Slower. Heavier.

His eyes didn’t blink.

The girl looked up weakly from the boy’s shoulder, still crying.

And in that moment, the man’s entire expression collapsed.

“No…” he whispered.

The boy stepped back even more, confused and scared.

“Do you know her?” he asked.

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he slowly took a step forward.

His voice broke.

“Where did you get this child?”

The boy tightened his grip.

“She’s my sister.”

Silence.

The man closed his eyes like the words physically hurt him.

When he opened them again, they were full of emotion he had buried for years.

“I thought…” he stopped. “I thought she was gone.”

The bakery worker froze, realizing something was terribly wrong.

The man’s hands trembled slightly as he looked at the toddler again.

Then, softly:

“Her name is Emma.”

The toddler blinked.

The boy stared at him.

“How do you know her name?”

The man finally spoke the truth.

Because this wasn’t a stranger.

This was a father who had lost his child years ago.

And just found her again in the worst possible place.

He knelt down slowly, his voice breaking completely.

“Please… let me fix what I destroyed.”
