đŹ PART 2: «The Child on the Sidewalk Was the Son She Lost»

The motherâs hand stopped in midair.
All the anger left her face.
Then the color.
She stared at the seated boy like the whole street had disappeared around him.
âWhat did you say?â
The boy lowered his eyes fast, suddenly ashamed.
âSorry,â he whispered. âYou look like her.â
Her son looked up at her, confused.
âMommy?â
But she couldnât answer.
Because the hungry boy had the same small scar near his eyebrow.
The same dark curls she used to kiss before leaving for work.
The same eyes she had searched for in crowds for four years.
She dropped to her knees on the wet pavement.
Her voice shook.
âWhatâs your name?â
The boy clutched the bread tighter.
âMalik.â
The mother covered her mouth.
A sound came out of her that didnât sound human.
Her son stepped closer, scared now.
âMommy, do you know him?â
She reached toward Malik with trembling fingers, then stopped before touching him, afraid he would vanish.
âI looked everywhere,â she cried. âThey told me you were gone.â
Malikâs lips trembled.
âThe man said you didnât want me anymore.â
She shook her head so hard tears flew from her lashes.
âNo. No, baby.â
The boy in the camel coat looked between them, then slowly pushed the bread back into Malikâs hands.
âHeâs my brother?â
The mother broke completely.
Malik stared at her, trying not to believe too fast.
âYou came back?â
She pulled him into her arms, sobbing into his wet hair.
âI never stopped coming back.â
Malik held the bread in one hand and clung to her with the other.
And for the first time in years, the child who had begged strangers for food was held like someone had been starving for him too.
