The sound echoed.

Silence followed.

“Tell me what happened,” he said.

Lucia shook her head slightly.
“It’s nothing…”

His voice lowered:
“It’s not nothing if you’re crying in my kitchen.”

The woman in green sighed dramatically:
“Alejandro, this is ridiculous. She’s exaggerating—”

He turned his head slowly toward her.

“Don’t speak for her.”

That shut her up.

He looked back at Lucia.

“Who told you to stand here like this?”

Lucia hesitated for a long moment.

Then her voice cracked.

“She did…”

A pause.

“She said I belong in the kitchen… because I don’t belong anywhere else here.”

The air changed instantly.

Alejandro’s jaw tightened.

The woman in green laughed nervously:
“You’re twisting this—”

“Stop talking,” Alejandro said.

Quiet. Final.

Lucia’s hands trembled harder now.

“I didn’t want trouble…” she whispered. “I just didn’t know where I was supposed to be.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“Look at me,” he said again.

She did.

And for the first time, she didn’t look away.

“What did you say?” he asked carefully.

Lucia’s voice broke completely:
“She said… I belong here… because I’m your daughter’s mother.”

Everything stopped.

The kitchen froze.

Even the distant music upstairs felt like it disappeared.

Alejandro didn’t move.

The woman in green went pale.

A glass somewhere upstairs slipped and shattered.

And in the silence that followed, Alejandro finally understood that nothing in his house would ever look the same again.
