šŸŽ¬ PART 2: Ā«The Son She Took to the GraveĀ»

The boy scrambled backward, clutching the photograph to his chest.

ā€œI didn’t steal it,ā€ he said quickly. ā€œIt’s mine.ā€

The man lifted both hands, his voice breaking.

ā€œI know.ā€

The boy stared at him through the fog.

ā€œWho are you?ā€

The man looked down at Olivia’s name, then back at the child.

ā€œMy name is Henry.ā€

The boy’s lips trembled.

ā€œMy mom used to say that name when she cried.ā€

Henry closed his eyes as pain moved through him.

For years, he had believed Olivia left him.

For years, he had let anger bury the love he never stopped feeling.

ā€œWhat’s your name?ā€ he whispered.

ā€œEvan.ā€

Henry almost collapsed.

That was the name Olivia had chosen the night they talked about having a family.

Evan looked away.

ā€œShe said if anything happened to her, I should find you. But your housekeeper said you didn’t want me.ā€

Henry’s face went pale.

ā€œMy housekeeper?ā€

Evan nodded, tears filling his eyes.

ā€œShe gave me money and told me never to come back. I spent it on Mom’s medicine.ā€

Henry covered his mouth.

His own staff had turned away his son.

His son had been sleeping on graves while he lived behind locked gates.

Evan’s voice cracked.

ā€œI couldn’t save her.ā€

Henry moved closer slowly.

ā€œNo, Evan. You were a child.ā€

The boy shook his head hard.

ā€œShe was cold. I put my coat on her. I said I was sorry because I didn’t have enough money for the doctor.ā€

Henry broke.

He pulled the boy into his arms, and Evan fought it for one second, too used to being pushed away.

Then he collapsed against him.

ā€œI’m sorry, Mom,ā€ Evan sobbed again. ā€œI found him too late.ā€

Henry held him tighter, tears falling onto the boy’s damp hair.

ā€œNo,ā€ he whispered. ā€œShe sent you to me right on time.ā€

Behind them, the fog drifted across Olivia’s grave.

Henry placed one hand on the marble stone and one around the son he never knew was alive.

ā€œI failed your mother,ā€ he said softly. ā€œBut I will not fail you.ā€

Evan looked up at him with red, tired eyes.

ā€œDo I have to sleep here tonight?ā€

Henry’s face crumpled.

He kissed the boy’s forehead and lifted him into his arms.

ā€œNever again.ā€
