Daniel stopped in the doorway.

His face had gone completely white.

Every person in the salon stared at him.

Marisol stepped protectively in front of Ava.

“Stay back,” she said.

Daniel looked confused.

“What is going on?”

I stood up, shaking with anger.

“What happened to her head?”

His eyes widened.

“What?”

I pointed toward the shaved patch.

The bruises.

The word carved into our daughter’s scalp.

For a moment, Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

Then something unexpected happened.

He started crying.

“I knew it…”

The room went silent.

My anger paused.

“What do you mean?” I demanded.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I’ve been trying to tell you for weeks.”

He opened a photo.

Then another.

And another.

Every picture showed the same thing.

The shaved patch.

The bruises.

The word.

My knees nearly gave out.

The photos were dated three weeks earlier.

Before Daniel had even returned from his business trip.

“What…?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“Ava begged me not to tell you.”

I turned toward my daughter.

Her face crumpled.

Then she burst into tears.

“The babysitter did it!” she sobbed.

The entire salon gasped.

“The babysitter said nobody would believe me. She said if I told anyone, she’d hurt Mom too.”

I felt sick.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside her.

“I wanted to call the police immediately,” he said. “But Ava was terrified. I was trying to get enough evidence.”

Ava threw herself into his arms.

“I’m sorry, Daddy.”

Daniel hugged her tightly.

“You never have to be afraid again.”

Later that evening, police arrested the babysitter.

Investigators discovered she had abused other children before moving to our city.

As officers led her away, Ava squeezed my hand.

“Mom?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She smiled through her tears.

“You believe me now?”

I wrapped my arms around her and Daniel.

“Always.”

And for the first time in weeks, our family finally felt safe again.
