“Before anyone signs another document,” the man said, “this room needs to know who owns the land beneath this hotel.”
The reporter closest to the aisle lifted her recorder. Sarah’s champagne flute stopped halfway to her mouth, and Michael took one slow step toward the red folder as though closing the distance could somehow change what was inside it.
My attorney did not hand the file to him.
He opened it toward the guests and placed a single recorded document on the registration table. The county seal sat at the top. My holding company’s name appeared beneath it, followed by the restriction that had governed the property from the day the Whitmans accepted the investment.
Sarah found her voice first. “This is a family business matter.”
“No,” the attorney replied. “It became a lender matter when hotel operations were offered for transfer without Ms. Herrera’s written authorization.”
That sentence landed harder than shouting could have.
Ashley lowered herself into the nearest chair. Her phone slipped against the tablecloth, and the screen lit with the old message she had once sent me after I paid her semester bill: I will never forget this.
Michael saw it.
So did the reporter.
He turned toward me, his face drained of the confidence he had worn while pushing the apron into my hands. “Emily, we can discuss this privately.”
I placed the black apron on the table beside Sarah’s bracelet. “You made your decision publicly.”
My attorney reached into the red folder again and removed the lender packet. A signed draft assignment rested inside, clipped behind the restriction notice.
He laid it flat, pointed to the signature line beneath Michael’s name, and asked the question that made Sarah grip the back of Ashley’s chair—
