Don't throw away sprouted potatoes, do it this way, the results are surprisingly good
What are the benefits of sprouting potatoes? Let’s find out.
When purchasing potatoes, if not stored properly, they can begin to sprout. However, as we know, it’s not recommended to eat sprouting potatoes as they can cause poisoning symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain if consumed in small quantities, and even low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, fever, etc., if consumed in large quantities.
Because of this, most people immediately throw sprouting potatoes away. However, this action is quite wasteful because although they cannot be eaten, we can still use sprouting potatoes for other purposes. Below are some benefits of sprouting potatoes:
-
Clean the kitchen and range hood
If you have sprouting potatoes at home, don’t throw them away. Try using them this way for an unexpected effective result.
After cooking, oil and grease easily stick to the kitchen surface, walls, and range hood. If not cleaned regularly, the stains will become hardened, making them difficult to remove and causing aesthetic and hygiene issues.
If you have sprouting potatoes at home, you can use them to solve this problem. The method is very simple. Just slice the sprouting potato, sprinkle some salt on the surface, then gently rub it on the kitchen surface and range hood.
The starch in the potato will quickly remove the hardened oil stains. Afterward, simply wipe it with a clean cloth.
-
Shine glass
Glass items are very luxurious but can easily get scratched or have water marks, diminishing their value. To fix this, you can use sprouting potatoes to rub over the glass surface. Then, continue by wiping it with a clean, dry cloth. Your glass will shine like new.
-
Soften leather shoes
New leather shoes can be quite stiff, causing discomfort when walking. In this case, you just need to rub a slice of sprouting potato around the shoes. The natural compounds in the potato will help soften the leather, making the shoes more comfortable.
-
Remove rust from pans
After a period of use, pans can develop rust. But don’t worry, the starch in potatoes can help you solve this issue.
First, pour some vinegar into the pan to soften the rust. Then, cut the sprouting potato into slices, apply some salt, and rub it on the pan. You will see the rust flakes come off. Afterward, wash the pan with clean water, and it will shine like new.
-
Grow roses
Potatoes provide nutrients and moisture, which can increase the success rate when grafting rose stems, helping the roots develop healthily. Additionally, as the potato starts to decompose, it becomes a very good fertilizer for plants. Therefore, instead of throwing away sprouting potatoes, you can use them to graft roses.
The method is very simple. Take a healthy rose stem, cut it at a 45-degree angle with scissors, and remove the faded flower buds, leaves, and thorns. Next, use a sharp object to create a hole in the potato so that the stem fits perfectly. Note that all tools must be cleaned before use.
Then, apply rooting hormone to the rose stem and insert it into the potato. Afterward, simply bury the potato in a prepared pot, water it regularly, and within a week, the rose stem will start to grow roots.
Additionally, you can also use sprouting potatoes to grow decorative plants or to harvest the new tubers later.
