Part 2: No one moved.

The father stared at the locket.
The mother stared at the old woman.
And the three little girls stayed pressed against her as if they belonged there.
The mother’s lips trembled.
“What did you just say?” she whispered.
The homeless woman looked at her through tears.
“I buried it with your mother,” she said again. “The night they told me she was dead.”
The mother felt her knees weaken.
Because she had spent her whole life with one story:
that she had been found alone, taken into care, and adopted after an accident no one could explain.
No grandmother.
No family.
No past.
Only paperwork.
Always paperwork.
The father stepped forward carefully.
“How do you know her?” he asked.
The old woman’s face crumpled.
“She was my daughter.”
The mother covered her mouth.
The triplets clung tighter to the old woman, still calling her Nonna, as if some part of them understood before any adult did.
The father looked stunned.
“That’s impossible,” he said. “Her records say—”
“Her records were bought,” the old woman whispered.
Silence.
The wind moved lightly through the square.
The old woman looked at the mother with unbearable grief.
“They took her after the fire,” she said. “A man came with papers. He said my daughter had died and the child had been sent away. I searched until I lost everything.”
The mother’s eyes filled with tears.
The old woman touched the silver locket with shaking fingers.
“I kept this because it was all they left me.”
The father frowned.
“Then why are the girls calling you Nonna?”
At that, the old woman went completely still.
Her eyes dropped to the triplets.
Then back up to the mother.
“They’re not just calling me that,” she whispered.
“They know the song.”
The mother froze.
Because at that exact moment, one of the toddlers started humming softly.
Then the second joined in.
Then the third.
A lullaby.
Old. Italian. Fragile.
The mother’s face broke apart.
It was the lullaby from her earliest memory—one she had never sung out loud in front of her daughters.
“How?” she whispered.
The old woman was crying openly now.
“My daughter used to sing that to you,” she said. “And I sang it to her.”
The father looked around the square as if reality itself had shifted.
But the true horror came a second later.
Because the old woman suddenly turned her head toward the far edge of the piazza.
Her whole body tensed.
The mother followed her gaze.
A man in a dark coat was standing near a stone archway, watching.
Too still.
Too focused.
The old woman’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper:
“That’s the man who took you.”
The mother went cold.
The father stepped in front of his family instantly.
But the old woman grabbed his sleeve with shocking force and said:
“Don’t let him leave. He knows what they did to her real mother.”
The triplets started crying.
The man under the archway turned—
and began walking away through the crowd.
The end.
