đŹ PART 2: «The Bikers Didnât Have to Pretend»
The large biker didnât blink.
âFunny.â
He looked down at the woman.
âShe just said weâre family.â
The suited manâs jaw tightened.
âShe has no children.â
The woman lowered her eyes.
That sentence hurt her more than the threat.
The biker saw it.
His face changed.
Not softer.
Deeper.
Like an old wound had opened.
He looked around the diner.
At the jukebox.
At the red booth.
At the counter where sunlight cut through dusty windows.
Then he pointed to the wall behind the register.
âWhereâs the photo?â
The woman looked up.
âWhat photo?â
âThe one with four boys in winter coats.â
Her breath caught.
The other bikers turned silent.
The large biker reached into his vest and pulled out an old, bent diner token.
On one side was the faded name of the place.
On the other, scratched by a childâs hand, were two words:
Eat free.
The woman covered her mouth.
âNoâŠâ
His voice became quiet.
âTwenty-six years ago, four boys slept behind your dumpster during a snowstorm.â
Her eyes filled.
âYou were starving.â
He nodded.
âYou found us before sunrise. You brought us inside. You gave us pancakes and told the sheriff we were your nephews so he wouldnât split us up.â
The suited man stepped back.
The womanâs hands started shaking.
âI thought you forgot.â
The biker smiled, but his eyes were wet.
âLady, I became a man because one night you called me a boy worth saving.â
The diner went completely still.
The man in the suit snapped, âThis changes nothing.â
The biker turned slowly.
âIt changes everything.â
The woman pulled the folded deed from her blouse pocket.
The paper was old.
Worn at the edges.
Her husbandâs handwriting was on the back.
She handed it to the biker with trembling fingers.
âMy Henry wrote this before he died. I never showed anyone.â
The biker unfolded it.
His face broke.
The note was short.
If they ever try to take this place from Martha, find the boys from Booth Seven. They were ours before they knew it.
The other bikers bowed their heads.
The woman began to cry now.
Not from fear.
From the shock of being protected by love she thought had disappeared decades ago.
The suited man reached for the deed.
The large biker caught his wrist before he touched it.
At the counter, the security camera blinked red.
The old waitress behind the register whispered, âItâs recording.â
The suited man looked up.
Panic finally entered his face.
The large biker leaned close.
âYou came here to scare an old woman into signing away the only home that ever fed us.â
His voice dropped.
âWrong diner.â
The other bikers moved behind him.
Not like strangers.
Like sons.
The woman looked at them through tears.
âI only asked you to pretend.â
The large biker turned back to her.
His expression softened completely.
âYou never had to ask.â
Then he picked up the broken coffee cup from the floor, set the pieces gently on the counter, and looked at the man in the suit.
âOur mother said no.â
