đŹ PART 2: «The Son He Told Her Was Dead»
Elenaâs knees nearly gave out.
âNo,â she whispered. âMy baby died.â
The young man stepped closer, tears filling his eyes.
âThatâs what he told you.â
Every face in the ballroom turned toward Richard.
His hand tightened around the microphone.
âElena, donât listen to him.â
But she was already looking at the bracelet.
Her name was on it.
Her room number.
The date she had spent twenty years trying not to remember.
The young manâs voice trembled.
âMy adoptive mother gave me this before she died. She said a wealthy man paid the hospital to say I didnât survive.â
Elena covered her mouth as a broken sob escaped her.
Richard stepped down from the stage. âThis is a scam.â
The young man looked at him coldly.
âNo. The scam was making her believe she was broken.â
Elena turned to her husband.
âYou knew?â
Richardâs silence was worse than a confession.
The young man placed a folder on the table.
âDNA results. Hospital records. Payment transfers. Everything.â
The room erupted in whispers.
Elena stared at Richard like she was seeing a stranger wearing her husbandâs face.
âYou let me grieve our son?â
Richardâs voice cracked. âMy father said a child would ruin the merger. I was young. I made a mistake.â
âA mistake?â she whispered. âYou buried my baby while he was alive.â
The young man stepped beside her, but did not touch her until she reached for him first.
Her hand shook as she touched his cheek.
âWhatâs your name?â
âDaniel.â
Elena broke completely.
âThat was the name I chose.â
He nodded, crying now.
âI know.â
She pulled him into her arms, and the whole ballroom watched the woman they had just laughed at hold the son she had mourned for twenty years.
Richard lowered his head. âElena, please.â
She turned toward him with tears still on her face.
âYou asked who wanted your useless wife for ten dollars.â
She took off her wedding ring and placed it on his table.
âMy son paid one million to remind me I was priceless.â
Then Elena walked out of the ballroom holding Danielâs hand, leaving Richard alone on the stage with a microphone, a frozen crowd, and the truth he could no longer sell.
