đŹ PART 2: «The Son She Tried to Kill Before He Was Found»
Richard could not take his eyes off the necklace.
Twenty-three years earlier, he had given it to a young woman he loved before his family forced him into a marriage arranged around power and money.
He had been told she left the country.
Vanessa had been the one who comforted him.
âWhat was your motherâs name?â Richard asked, his voice barely audible.
The boy swallowed through the pain in his throat.
âMaria Torres.â
Richardâs face went white.
Vanessa shook her head quickly. âRichard, this is insane. Maria disappeared because she wanted nothing to do with you.â
The boy reached into his torn shirt and pulled out a small plastic bag containing an old photograph and a folded letter.
âShe didnât disappear,â he said. âShe spent years hiding me from the woman who threatened to have us killed.â
Richard took the photograph with shaking hands.
It showed Maria holding a newborn baby.
Around the infantâs neck was the same silver pendant.
On the back, she had written:
His name is Gabriel. His father deserves to know him.
Richard looked at the boyâs bruised face.
âGabrielâŠâ
The young manâs lips trembled at the sound of his name in Richardâs voice.
Vanessa backed away. âThis proves nothing.â
A sudden shout came from the hangar.
One of the mechanics ran toward them, pale and breathless, holding a small device in his gloved hands.
âMr. Hale, step away from the aircraft,â he said. âThere is an explosive wired beneath the passenger seat.â
Richardâs eyes slowly moved to his wife.
Vanessaâs face collapsed.
âYou were going to let me die,â he said.
Her voice became thin and frantic.
âYou were changing your will. You were looking for Maria again. I knew once you found him, everything would go to your son.â
Gabriel stared at her in shock.
âYou knew about me all this time?â
Vanessa looked away.
Richard closed his eyes for one broken second.
Then he turned toward Gabriel.
âWhy is your face bleeding?â
Gabrielâs breathing hitched.
âI came here with my motherâs letter this morning,â he said. âShe had just died. Vanessa saw the necklace and told her men to make sure I never reached you.â
Richardâs expression crumpled.
The son he never knew had arrived grieving, alone, and had still risked his life to save him.
He stepped forward and gently touched Gabrielâs battered cheek.
âIâm sorry,â he whispered. âI should have found you.â
Gabriel tried to stay strong, but his face twisted with years of buried pain.
âShe waited for you until the end.â
Richard pulled him into his arms.
For a moment, Gabriel stood stiffly, unsure how to be held by a father he had only known from a faded photograph.
Then he broke down against Richardâs chest.
Behind them, security officers approached Vanessa as police sirens grew louder beyond the estate gates.
She reached toward Richard.
âPlease. I loved you.â
He held his son tighter.
âNo,â he said quietly. âYou loved what my death would leave you.â
Vanessa was led away beneath the roaring helicopter blades.
Richard looked down at the silver pendant in Gabrielâs trembling hand, then pressed it gently against his sonâs chest.
âYour mother gave me back my life twice,â he whispered. âOnce through you, and once through what you did today.â
Gabriel wiped his tears with a bloody sleeve.
âI donât need your money.â
Richard nodded, his eyes filling again.
âI know.â
He placed one arm around his sonâs shoulders and guided him away from the helicopter.
âBut you will never have to face this world without your father again.â
