Simply adding water isn't enough when cooking sticky rice: Follow this method for soft, chewy rice and half the cooking time.
A Simple Tip for Perfectly Soft and Fragrant Sticky Rice
With the simple tip below, you’ll find that your sticky rice turns out wonderfully fragrant, soft, and chewy—so delicious that you’ll never get tired of eating it.
Ingredients for Sticky Rice
-
500 g glutinous rice
-
A small handful of pandan leaves
-
Seasonings:
-
1 tablespoon cooking oil
-
A pinch of salt
-
Banana leaves (optional, for lining the steamer)
-
How to Choose High-Quality Glutinous Rice
To make truly delicious sticky rice, choosing the right rice is essential. Look for glutinous rice grains that are milky white, evenly shaped, and plump. When you smell the rice, it should have a light, natural fragrance, indicating freshness.
For best results, you can choose “Nếp cái hoa vàng”, a popular variety known for its excellent stickiness and distinctive aroma after cooking. When tasted raw, good-quality glutinous rice often has a mild natural sweetness.
Tip: Always buy rice from reputable stores to ensure quality and avoid old or low-grade grains that can affect the final texture of your sticky rice.
How to Cook Sticky Rice

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Rinse the glutinous rice 2–3 times with clean water until the water runs clear. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, then pour in enough water to cover the rice by about one finger’s width. Soak the rice overnight.
Note: Soaking the rice beforehand helps the grains expand evenly, become softer and more aromatic, prevents undercooked centers, and significantly shortens the steaming time.
Wash the pandan leaves thoroughly and let them drain. Wipe both sides of the banana leaves clean with a damp cloth if you plan to use them for lining the steamer.
Step 2: Steam the Sticky Rice
After soaking, drain the rice well. Line the steamer basket with banana leaves, then spread the rice evenly on top. Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil and mix gently so the grains are coated. Place the pandan leaves evenly over the surface of the rice.
Steam over medium heat for about 30–45 minutes. During steaming, occasionally open the lid to wipe off excess condensation and use chopsticks to fluff and mix the rice so it cooks evenly.
Continue steaming until the rice grains become translucent, soft, and sticky.
Step 3: Finished Dish
Once cooked, the sticky rice will be soft, chewy, and wonderfully fragrant with the aroma of pandan leaves. This dish pairs perfectly with sesame salt, braised pork and eggs, shredded pork floss, or other savory sides. It can also be enjoyed as a vegetarian or non-vegetarian meal.
Thanks to this method, your sticky rice will remain light, flavorful, and not overly rich, while also saving cooking time. A simple preparation technique can make a big difference in turning an everyday dish into something truly satisfying.
