On January 1, 2026, a commercial flight departed from Hong Kong carrying passengers who had already welcomed the New Year with fireworks, countdowns, and festive celebrations. Midnight had passed, champagne glasses had clinked, and for everyone on board, 2026 had officially begun.

While it may feel like a scene from science fiction, this phenomenon is entirely real and rooted in how the world measures time. Earth is divided into 24 time zones, and the International Date Line — an imaginary line running roughly along the 180th meridian in the Pacific Ocean — marks the point where one calendar day changes to the next. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), crossing the line from west to east causes travelers to move back one calendar day, while crossing it from east to west moves the date forward (NOAA).

Aviation experts explain that long-haul flights between Asia and North America frequently create this illusion of “time travel.” As noted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), flying east shortens the calendar day because travelers move against Earth’s rotation, sometimes resulting in arrivals that appear to occur before departure dates on the calendar (IATA). Major media outlets such as BBC and CNN have also reported similar cases where passengers celebrate New Year’s Eve twice due to time zone differences and trans-Pacific travel (BBC; CNN).

For those onboard the January 1 flight, the experience served as a vivid reminder that time is not experienced uniformly across the globe. While physics did not bend and the laws of nature remained intact, geography and human-made timekeeping systems combined to create a moment that felt extraordinary.

In the end, it wasn’t true time travel — but it was a rare and memorable demonstration of how our perception of time depends entirely on where we are in the world.
