Urgent warning after girl is blinded from household product
An Australian family has shared a frightening experience after their four-year-old daughter was temporarily blinded in one eye by a common household item — a laundry detergent pod. The parents are now speaking out to warn others about the potential dangers that many families may not fully realize.
The young girl, Luca de Groot, was helping her mother, Jodi Lowe, with the laundry at home when the accident happened. While her mother briefly looked away, Luca picked up a Persil washing pod and bit into it, likely thinking it was something harmless. The colorful detergent capsule instantly burst, spraying its liquid contents directly onto her face.
Within seconds, Luca began screaming in pain. Startled and confused, the little girl instinctively rubbed her face in an attempt to wipe the substance away. Unfortunately, this caused the detergent to spread further and enter her eyes, making the situation even more serious.
Realizing something was terribly wrong, Jodi quickly rushed her daughter into the shower and tried to rinse the detergent from her face with water. The warning label on the washing pod instructs users to “immediately flush eyes with water and seek medical advice,” so she did everything she could in that moment to wash the chemical away.
However, Luca’s condition continued to worsen despite the immediate rinsing. Concerned about the severity of the situation, Jodi quickly took her daughter to the hospital for emergency medical care.
Doctors attempted to flush Luca’s eyes multiple times in the emergency department, trying to remove the remaining detergent and reduce the chemical irritation. Unfortunately, after four attempts, the treatments were unsuccessful. Medical staff determined that the damage was too severe to treat with simple rinsing.
As a result, Luca was rushed into the operating room for emergency surgery.
According to reports from The Sun, Luca ultimately required three separate procedures. During the third surgery, doctors performed an amniotic membrane transplant — a specialized treatment often used to help heal damaged eye tissue and reduce scarring. The delicate procedure was necessary to support the recovery of her injured eye.
In total, Luca spent 16 days in the hospital undergoing treatment and recovery. Even after leaving the hospital, her vision had not fully returned.
Speaking about the ordeal, Luca’s mother told Daily Mail that her daughter is still recovering slowly.
“Her sight in her left eye isn’t fully back yet, but it is gradually improving,” Jodi explained. “She still has a slight vision impairment.”
The experience has been deeply traumatic for the family.
“It could have been so much worse,” she said. “It’s been incredibly hard. Watching your child in that much pain and feeling helpless is something no parent ever wants to experience.”
Following the incident, Jodi is now urging other parents to be extremely cautious with detergent pods and similar household products. While many packages warn parents to keep them out of reach of children, she believes the current warnings are not strong or clear enough.
“I know the packaging says to keep them away from children, but it doesn’t clearly say how serious the injuries can be or that you may need to go straight to a hospital,” she said. “It just says ‘seek medical advice,’ which doesn’t really convey the urgency.”
Jodi admitted that before the accident, she had no idea how dangerous the pods could be.
“I didn’t realize the extent of the injuries they could cause,” she explained. “You wouldn’t expect that direct contact could lead to severe chemical burns, multiple surgeries, and more than two weeks in the hospital.”
Now, she hopes that sharing Luca’s story will help raise awareness among other parents and caregivers.
“There needs to be more awareness and stronger warnings on the packaging,” she said. “If people truly understood the risks, they might store these products much more carefully.”
The family hopes that by speaking out, other children can be protected from experiencing the same terrifying accident.
