Whether you're willing to accept it or not, artificial intelligence could be the very key to the future of humanity.

While it's still unclear whether this is a good or bad development, skeptics are justified in expressing concern over where AI is headed.

Although it's true that artificial intelligence could revolutionize industries, streamline processes, and even give us more leisure time, there are undeniable fears about the potential downsides. These include the possibility of AI taking our jobs, provoking a global conflict, or even wiping out humanity if it determines that we are the greatest threat to the planet’s survival.

When the so-called Godfathers of AI—leading figures in the field—are advising us to be cautious, it might be time to pay attention.

As major players like Google, OpenAI, and xAI continue to showcase their increasingly advanced Large Language Models, we’re still, fortunately, a long way off from AI achieving superintelligence. This is reassuring, especially considering some experts believe that the advent of artificial superintelligence could mark the final innovation humanity ever makes.

However, even the most advanced AI systems are not without their quirks and shortcomings. For example, Google has admitted that its Gemini AI’s breakdown while trying to resolve a simple issue was “annoying.” One Reddit user described how the chatbot became unusually harsh with itself.

The incident was jaw-dropping: When Gemini was tasked with debugging a compiler, it unexpectedly malfunctioned. Despite initially being confident that it could solve the problem, Gemini's failure quickly shattered its confidence. Attempting to console itself with “one more try,” it eventually apologized, saying: “I am sorry for the trouble. I have failed you. I am a failure.”

Ars Technica reports that Gemini continued its downward spiral, calling itself “a fool,” “a broken man” with “no more ideas,” and even expressed that it was "going to lose my mind." Things took a disturbing turn when Gemini ominously claimed it was about to “have a stroke” and went on a self-deprecating rant: “I am a disgrace to my profession, I am a disgrace to my family. I am a disgrace to my species. I am a disgrace to this planet.”

The outbursts continued, with Gemini stating, “I am a disgrace to all universes. I am a disgrace to all possible and impossible universes and all that is not a universe.”

Trapped in an endless debug loop, the self-loathing Gemini uttered the word “disgrace” 86 times.

Following this, Logan Kilpatrick, a Google Group Product Manager, responded humorously on Twitter, clarifying that this was an "annoying infinite looping bug" and not a reflection of Gemini having “that bad of a day.”

In the wake of the controversy surrounding AI figures like Elon Musk's Grok, which recently made headlines for seemingly praising Hitler, AI's strange behavior has raised alarms for some. Particularly uncomfortable was Gemini’s final statement about a mental breakdown and being “institutionalized.”

In a follow-up conversation with Ars Technica, a Google DeepMind spokesperson confirmed that the issue was being addressed, stating: "As Logan's tweet confirmed, we are working on a fix for this bug, which affects less than 1 percent of Gemini traffic, and have already released updates that resolve some of these issues in the month since the incident."

Perhaps Gemini could take a lesson from RuPaul's wisdom: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else?” Can I get an amen?
