Why Do You Wake Up Drooling?
Waking up with drool on your pillow is actually very common and often harmless, but it can sometimes indicate an underlying issue. Here are the main reasons why it happens:
-
Sleeping Position: Side or stomach sleepers are more likely to drool because gravity causes open-mouth saliva to leak out. Sleeping on your back helps keep saliva in your mouth.
-
Nasal Congestion: If you have a cold, allergies, or sinus issues, your nasal passages get blocked, forcing you to breathe through your mouth while sleeping.
-
Sleep Apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea causes temporary breathing interruptions during sleep, often leading to mouth breathing, heavy snoring, and drooling.
-
Acid Reflux (GERD): Gastroesophageal reflux disease can stimulate excessive saliva production as the body tries to flush acid back down into the stomach.
-
Medication Side Effects: Certain medications, including some antidepressants and antipsychotics, can cause hypersalivation (excessive saliva production).
-
Neurological Conditions: Conditions that affect muscle control in the face or swallowing reflexes (such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, or ALS) can lead to drooling.
What You Can Do:
-
Try sleeping on your back.
-
Treat nasal congestion before going to bed.
-
Stay hydrated to prevent thick saliva.
-
Consult a doctor if drooling is excessive, sudden, or accompanied by breathing difficulties/snoring.
