FREDERICK, Md. — Kaylee Hottle, the breakout Deaf actress best known for her memorable role as Jia in the Godzilla franchise, has tragically passed away following a single-vehicle car accident in Maryland. She was 18 or 19 years old.

The fatal crash occurred early Tuesday morning, July 21, 2026, on Windsor Road in Ijamsville. According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, a 1995 Honda Accord occupied by three people traveled off the right side of the road and struck a culvert around 2:52 a.m. Authorities suspect excessive speed was a key contributing factor.

Hottle was rushed to a nearby trauma center via medical helicopter, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her father, Joshua Hottle, revealed in an emotional Facebook livestream that emergency responders fought tirelessly to save her, though her heart stopped before reaching the trauma facility. The 19-year-old male driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.

Mourning a Rising Star and a Devoted Student

News of Hottle's passing sent shockwaves through both Hollywood and her school community. A senior at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), Hottle was remembered not only as a talented actress but as an ambitious student devoted to her education, debate team, and community.

"Kaylee was absolutely a joy to have as both my English student and Debate Bowl student," shared her teacher, Mali Shadi Nikkhah, in a heartfelt tribute, recalling the hours Hottle spent rehearsing arguments during lunch breaks and preparing for her upcoming senior year.

Growing up in Georgia within a four-generation Deaf family, Hottle was a native speaker of American Sign Language (ASL). Her innate expressive abilities catapulted her to international recognition in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, where her character formed an iconic emotional bond with King Kong. She recently reprised her role in the 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Throughout her career, Hottle expressed pride in bringing meaningful ASL representation to blockbuster cinema, hoping to pave the way for other Deaf performers.
