Actress Marla Gibbs to Release New Memoir at 94
TV Legend Marla Gibbs, 94, to Release First Memoir “It’s Never Too Late” — A Testament to Strength, Faith, and Longevity
She’s finally ready to tell her story — in her own words.
For more than five decades, Marla Gibbs has reigned as one of television’s most beloved and enduring icons. The Emmy-nominated and NAACP Image Award–winning actress is best remembered for her sharp wit and unforgettable performances as Florence Johnston on The Jeffersons and Mary Jenkins on 227 — roles that broke barriers and brought warmth, humor, and unapologetic honesty to Black representation on TV (Variety).
Now, at the age of 94, Gibbs is stepping into a new spotlight — that of an author. Her upcoming memoir, titled It’s Never Too Late, will be released in early 2026 and promises to take readers on an intimate, inspiring journey through the highs and lows of her extraordinary life (People).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the book will trace Gibbs’ early years growing up on Chicago’s South Side, her struggles as a single mother, and her courageous decision to relocate to Los Angeles in pursuit of her acting dreams — all while balancing family responsibilities and working as a United Airlines reservation clerk. Her path was far from easy, but her determination turned challenges into stepping stones.
More than a Hollywood success story, It’s Never Too Late is described as a blueprint for resilience, perseverance, and reinvention, reflecting Gibbs’ unshakable belief in faith, self-worth, and community.
“I believe no matter the challenges one faces, it is never too late to turn your life around or make a difference,” Gibbs told People. “I am grateful and ready to reveal the challenges I overcame as a way of service to those who wish to transform their tests into testimonies.”
Over her storied career, Gibbs became a trailblazer not only onscreen but behind the scenes. She produced and starred in 227, which spotlighted working-class Black families and paved the way for generations of sitcoms that followed (NBC News). She also opened the Marla Gibbs Crossroads Arts Academy and Theatre, mentoring young Black artists and emphasizing the importance of creative control in Hollywood — themes she explores deeply in her memoir.
As she approaches her 95th birthday, Gibbs remains active and vibrant, appearing in recent projects such as Grey’s Anatomy, Days of Our Lives, and A Black Lady Sketch Show. Her longevity, both in life and career, continues to inspire fans and fellow entertainers alike.
It’s Never Too Late will be published on February 24, 2026, and is currently available for preorder wherever books are sold.
In an era where few entertainers achieve the kind of lasting impact Gibbs has, her memoir is expected to serve as both a historical reflection and a heartfelt message to anyone who believes their time has passed.
Because, as Marla Gibbs reminds us — it’s never too late to dream, to fight, or to rise.
