I noticed a light behind my outlet out of nowhere. Is this something to be concerned about?
I Suddenly Noticed an Orange Glow Coming From Behind My Electrical Outlet — Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Ignore It
You’re sitting at home when something catches your eye.
There appears to be an orange glow coming from behind an electrical outlet.
It wasn’t there before. Nothing obvious has changed. Yet suddenly the wall plate seems to be illuminated from the inside.
The first thought is understandably alarming:
“Is something burning inside my wall?”
In this case, that question deserves to be taken seriously.
First, Make Sure It Isn’t an Intentional Night-Light
Some modern outlets have built-in guide lights, indicator LEDs, USB charging ports, or illuminated accessories.
The outlet in the photo appears to include USB ports, so it’s worth checking its exact model. Some receptacles intentionally produce a small indicator light.
But the photograph shows something different-looking: a relatively broad orange glow appearing around the bottom and side of the wall plate.
If that glow genuinely appeared unexpectedly and isn’t a feature of the receptacle, don’t assume it’s harmless.
An Orange Glow Can Potentially Mean Electrical Arcing or Overheating
Loose electrical connections can create resistance and heat.
Damaged wiring or a failing receptacle can also produce arcing, and electrical faults occurring behind an outlet can become a fire hazard.
There are usually other warning signs worth watching for:
- A burning or hot-plastic smell
- Crackling, buzzing, or sizzling
- A warm or hot wall plate
- Brown or black discoloration
- Flickering power
- Sparks
- A breaker that repeatedly trips
If any of these accompany an unexplained glow, treat the situation as urgent.
Don’t Pull the Outlet Apart to Investigate
It’s tempting to remove the faceplate and look behind it.
Don’t do that while the circuit is energized.
If you don’t know exactly why the outlet is glowing, stop using it and unplug anything connected to it if that can be done safely.
If you know which breaker controls the outlet, switching that circuit off is the safer option until the cause can be inspected.
If there’s smoke, active sparking, a strong burning smell, or signs of fire, leave the area and contact emergency services rather than trying to dismantle the outlet yourself.
There Could Be a Completely Innocent Explanation
There’s an important twist.
Sometimes strange-looking electrical photographs turn out to have harmless explanations: sunlight entering through a nearby window, an LED inside an electronic receptacle, or light coming through a gap in the wall.
The nearby window in this photograph makes reflected or transmitted sunlight one possibility.
An easy clue is whether the glow changes or disappears as the sunlight changes.
But electrical safety isn’t something worth gambling on.
If the orange light persists after dark, becomes brighter, feels warm, smells unusual, or wasn’t previously present, have the outlet inspected by a qualified electrician.
The Bottom Line
An outlet should not suddenly start producing an unexplained orange glow.
It might be an innocent LED or sunlight effect.
But if you can’t positively identify the source, treat it as a possible electrical fault until proven otherwise.
Because when electricity starts doing something you’ve never seen it do before, “I’ll just see if it goes away” isn’t the experiment you want to run.
