This evening, I went into my girlfriend’s bathroom and noticed something strange lying on the floor.
At first, I barely paid attention to it. It was small, dark, and oddly shaped, sitting near one of the damp areas of the bathroom. My immediate assumption was that it was simply a piece of trash—maybe a strip of rubber, part of some broken bathroom item, or something that had accidentally fallen onto the floor.
But as I was about to walk away, something made me stop.
There was something unsettling about the way it looked.
I leaned forward slightly and stared at it for a few seconds. It was dark, thick, and uneven, with a texture that didn't look like ordinary plastic or rubber. The longer I looked, the more uncomfortable I became.
For some reason, one thought suddenly entered my mind:
What if it's alive?
I immediately took a step back.
I tried to convince myself that my imagination was getting the better of me. After all, bathrooms are full of strange-looking things—pieces of hair, bits of soap, wet tissue, debris from drains, and all sorts of objects that can look completely different when they're wet.
Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was different.
I started looking around the bathroom.
I checked near the drain, around the toilet, beneath the sink, and along the edges of the walls. Then I looked at the pipes and even glanced toward the ceiling, wondering where this strange thing could possibly have come from.
Had it crawled out of the drain?
Had someone accidentally brought it inside?
Or worse, could there be more of them somewhere?
That last thought made my skin crawl.
The bathroom had always seemed perfectly normal to me. It was clean and familiar, the kind of place where you wouldn't expect to find anything unusual. Yet suddenly, every dark corner and damp surface seemed suspicious.
I kept staring at the object from a safe distance.
Eventually, curiosity became stronger than fear.
I carefully moved closer and took another look. This time, I paid attention to its surface and shape. That's when I noticed something that immediately confirmed my suspicion.
It appeared to move.
Not dramatically. There was no sudden jump or rapid crawling. It was only a subtle movement, but it was enough.
This wasn't a piece of rubber.
It wasn't trash.
It was alive.
At that point, I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with. I took a picture and started searching online, comparing what I had found with different images.
After several searches, I finally found something that looked almost identical.
It was a leech.
The moment I realized what it was, I felt even more uncomfortable.
Leeches are worm-like creatures that usually live in moist environments, particularly freshwater and other wet areas. Many species are known for attaching themselves to animals or humans and feeding on blood.
Knowing that made finding one inside a bathroom feel much more disturbing.
My mind immediately filled with questions.
How had it gotten there?
Had it come through the plumbing or been carried inside somehow?
How long had it been on the floor?
And most importantly, were there any others nearby?
I checked the bathroom again, this time much more carefully. Every small shadow suddenly looked suspicious. Every dark mark near the drain made me stop and examine it.
Even after the leech was gone, the feeling remained.
What disturbed me most wasn't necessarily the creature itself. It was how quickly an ordinary, familiar place could suddenly feel completely different.
A few minutes earlier, it had just been a normal bathroom.
Then one tiny discovery changed everything.
It's strange how something so small can trigger such a strong reaction. You can spend months or years walking through the same room without thinking twice about what's around you. But once you discover something unexpected—especially something alive—you start noticing every corner, every drain, and every damp surface.
In the end, the experience taught me a simple lesson: sometimes the strangest discoveries happen in the most ordinary places.
And once you've found a leech lying on the bathroom floor, it's surprisingly difficult to look at that bathroom the same way again.
