Why is the left side of the gas stove not suitable for cooking?

Gas Stoves in Modern Kitchens

Gas stoves are currently installed in many household kitchens, providing great convenience. Typically, two burners are installed, and they are used together for faster cooking.

But have you ever wondered why it’s not advisable to cook on the left side of the gas stove? Let’s explore why.

Why is it not recommended to cook on the left side of the gas stove?

First, we must clarify that any burner, whether on the left or right, can be used for cooking. However, when comparing the two, the right side is generally more suitable for cooking. There are mainly two reasons:

  1. Preventing Burns

Many people are used to holding things with their right hand and tend to use the right hand to season food while cooking.

If you cook on the left burner and the right burner is still on, during cooking, you’ll have to pass over the right burner to grab spices, which can easily lead to burns.

Additionally, if the spices are placed on the left, you need to turn around to get them, which is not as convenient, especially if you’re not used to using your left hand. It’s easy to spill the spices this way.

  1. Different Fire Power

Most modern gas stoves are designed with burners that have different fire powers. The right burner is typically stronger, making it more suitable for frying dishes. On the other hand, the left burner is better for simmering and boiling.

Of course, there are also gas stoves with burners that have the same fire power on both sides. If you prefer this type of stove, you can check the specifications when purchasing.

In general, the heat output is usually indicated on the stove's label. If the heat sizes are the same, it means the burners have the same fire power on both sides.

Some Tips When Using a Gas Stove:

Although gas stoves are very convenient, we should pay attention to safety precautions to avoid gas leaks, which could be dangerous.

  1. Ensure Proper Ventilation in the Kitchen

When using a gas stove, avoid closing the kitchen door or windows. A confined space may cause gas to accumulate, which could lead to poisoning.

Therefore, it’s best to open the door and windows when using the gas stove, or use a range hood to help ventilate the room.

If you detect that the stove has been turned off, immediately turn off the gas, open the window for ventilation, and turn on the range hood. Wait until the gas smell is gone before returning to the kitchen to check for the cause of the flame being extinguished.

  1. Always Check if the Gas Stove is Off

Before leaving the kitchen or going to bed, always check that the gas stove is completely off to avoid any gas leaks during the night.

  1. Don’t Leave the Stove Unattended for Long Periods

Cooking soup can take a long time, so many people are used to leaving the stove on while they do other tasks. However, this is very dangerous, as the soup can overflow or be forgotten, causing it to burn, and the spilled liquid could lead to a gas leak.
