The black stallion stayed on his knees, his huge head lowered to the little girl’s chest like he was greeting someone he had lost.

The man in denim stepped closer, shaken.

“What did you say?” 

The girl kept her hand on the horse’s forehead.

“My mama told me he would know me.”

The man’s eyes narrowed.

“What was your mother’s name?”

The girl looked up at him.

“Rose.”

The rope slipped from his hand.

Behind the fence, the old ranch hands stopped breathing.

Rose had been the only rider that stallion ever trusted.

Rose had disappeared seven years ago, after the owner’s son denied the baby she was carrying and sent her away with nothing.

The girl reached into her pocket and pulled out a tiny silver horseshoe charm.

“My mama said if I ever found this ranch, I should show this.”

The man in denim stared at it.

His lips trembled.

“I gave that to her.”

The girl’s face changed.

“You knew my mother?”

The stallion rose slowly, standing beside her like a guard.

The man dropped to his knees in the dirt.

“I loved her,” he whispered. “I thought she left because she hated me.”

The girl shook her head, tears filling her eyes.

“She waited for you until she died.”

The man covered his mouth.

The crowd stood silent now, ashamed of every laugh.

The girl looked at him with the same eyes he had never forgotten.

“My mama said my father would be here.”

The man reached toward her, shaking.

“He is,” he whispered. “I’m here.”
